For years I have hearing about HBO's series, Deadwood from
people that were talking up its merits.

It actually took several years and the insistence of a co-worker
who let me borrow his Season One set for me to finally sit down
and give the show a viewing.

Moments ago I completed the final episode of Season One, applauding
what I had just witnessed on the screen.

It's a real testament to how great a show truly is when I will spend
valuable time watching an entire season in a mere 4 days.

This is probably the best television series I have ever watched.

I should be starting Season Two sometime in the next two days.

I can't wait to get back into it.

Wow, i have not seen this show myself. But i have it on my NetFlix Q. If not for the price of HBO shows, i would buy more than i have! Band of brothers is the only one i own, and thats a fantastic show too. Course now it will be on Blu-ray! If Deadwood is good, like good enough to buy, hold out for the Blu-ray version!

In my opinion television will never get any better than the first five episodes of season one. Up through the end of the Wild Bill arc is just incredible. I enjoyed all three seasons, but season one was heads and shoulders above the others, in my opinion.

Possible non-specific spoiler.....

I was sorry the series had to end unfinished. Really an injustice to a great, great show.

As a Deadwood fan, I'm glad to hear that you liked it, Ron.

Deadwood really is one of the best things ever to run on HBO.

I had never seen it either, Ron, but last year I got a deal on the dvds (all three seasons) at Costco, so I took the plunge on the advice of co-workers. GREAT series! So glad I bought it.

There is a terrific book by creator David Milch called "Deadwood: Stories of the Black Hills," which covers the true Deadwood and the making of the series in depth. HIGHLY recommended. However, if you do get it, do NOT read it until you have finished all 3 seasons, as it was written after the end of the series and contains a few major spoilers, which I wish I hadn't read before I saw the last few episodes.

Don't be too optimistic about season 2. After feeling the same way you do about the first season, I found the second to be really disappointing.

I'm sure I'm a minority but I thought the second season was the best year of the show.

EDIT: I loved seeing the outside world starting to intrude on the town. I also enjoyed the characters (and stories) that they introduced like Wolcott and his dark desires, Bullock's family, the fight between Bullock and Swearingen in the first episode and the last episode's arrival of Hearst.

I just wish hbo would have let DM give it a better closing. hbo canceled late in season 3, there was rumors hbo was going to give a 4hrs mins series to close out the show better but it never happen. Honestly I dont know why hbo soured on the show, but like carnivale,it desired better ending then it got.:frowning:

I think HBO expected ratings numbers comparable to THE SOPRANOS and were disappointed when DEADWOOD didn't deliver. (Neither did ROME, another show they had high expectations for.) The fact is that NO series on paycable has ever delivered ratings like THE SOPRANOS, so I think HBO was foolish to expect that. They certainly canceled DEADWOOD one or two seasons too early.

Come on, this (hyped) show started in 2004 right, how can it be better than everything that came before/the best thing ever? No way. Not IMHO, anyhoo.

Well, just like that is your opinion, his opinion was that it was the best. Everyone's entitled.

Sure, and I'm okay with it. But I mean, a show made today? To me it's incomprehensible, judging by what I've seen of it. "Centennial" yes, but "Deadwood"! The good days of TV are loooong gone for this man.

For the record, I never said this was the best show
ever made, but rather the best show I ever personally
watched.

I remember thinking Deadwood couldn't be as good as people were saying. And it was! Still, I'm glad I first saw it on DVD, where I could get the benefit of the extras and watch at my own pace, i.e. MUCH faster than the seasons were broadcast on HBO.

Carnivàle is another great series. Just got the DVDs at Costco for $16.99 per season. Just finished S1, and can't wait to watch S2.

LOL Ive always felt (in my oppion) that the sopranos was a vastly over rated show and was always mystified by all the hype it got , again it was good but not great tv. I like deadwood and carnivale much more, maybe I couldnt get it the anti hero worship of a bunch low rent NJ mob soliders? For me the popularity of the sopranos was always mystifing. But I was also mystified by the long run of porn oops sex in the city, but maybe it because I'm a guy:P ;) .

After the first three seasons The Sopranos was garbage.

DEADWOOD feels so much more solid in its performances. Only
one season and I can see this will be far more enjoyable than
The Sopranos was in its final 3 years.

Of course the Emmys ignored this awesome show like they did The Wire, but at least Ian McShane got a Golden Globe for best actor for the second season. And when you screen that season, you'll also ... squirm ... believe he should have got a purple heart.

And to think that John from Cincinnati is all we got from David Milch instead of a fourth and finale season for this landmark piece of television. And he's moving on to another probably lame show for HBO instead of the four-hour finale we were supposed to get for Deadwood. To quote Swerengen ... well, there IS no quoting him on a expletive-free forum.
