Wrong. AMG is the performance division of Benz. Just like "M" (Motorsport) is the performance division of BMW. All Mercedes dealers sell AMG cars. They are part of the regular dealer stock. (Although they are manufactured in a separate section of Benz in Germany.)But if memory serves, they weren't always a subsidiary of M-B. I remember many years ago, when I used to read all the car mags much more religiously than I do now, I read about a modded version of one of the M-B junior sedans (I think the 190E or 300E-type) dubbed the AMG Hammer (gotta admit, it's a pretty cool name!). At that point, AMG was an aftermarket-mod firm, like Dinan or Lorinser is nowadays. My understanding is that M-B finally decided to get themselves a "sport" division in one fell swoop, by buying up AMG, and making them a part of the mother firm.
