Women May Enjoy Humor More, if It's Funny.

The article also notes how men like slapstick and one-liner humor more than women.

Yeah, it seems obvious, but now we have PROOF! [IMG]

(I wonder if chicks enjoy my halitosis .sig more than the dudes?)

BTW, apologies for using the American spelling of humour - I don't want to piss off the majority posters on this board!

I usually FAINT whenever I find a female that understands the humor of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" - To some extent, the Naked Gun films, but MST3K is definitely a male humor dominated show.

That would indeed be shocking Mark. I do know of one woman who didn't mind "Something About Mary" either - although maybe that has more universal appeal than I thought?

Actually, 2 of the writers (and cast members) of MST3K were women, if I'm not mistaken.

But that doesn't mean they think it's funny. [IMG]

Any movie that features mangling of male genitalia is a hit with women. Make a movie featuring female circumcision or cutting off breasts and you are labeled a misogynist fiend, but mangle a winky on the screen (or in real life - i.e. Bobbit jokes) and you are a comic genius. [IMG]

Mark, get out your smelling salts, because I LOVE MST3K! Some of the best things in the later seasons came from Mary Jo, AKA Pearl Forrester.

My "adopted" mom loves it when I sing part of the theme song:

"They'll try to survive the Wrath of Pearl
Just an evil gal who wants to rule the world."

Perhaps it is because mom's name is also Pearl?

What would be a list of comedic ventures (films, television shows, plays, troupes, music, etc.) that -- in general -- men find funny but not women?

Is there any one "thing" that most men consider hilarious but most women despise?

The Three Stooges. Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk.

And probably "dead baby" jokes... and "yo mama" jokes.

Good question Michael, I know there isn't one thing where 100% of the women hate it (as is the case with Lynda-Marie), but I'm sure we can come up with a list where the majority of women hate it while the men don't.

I would say the #1 instance would be "Howard Stern" [IMG]

    Again, I would add:
    -MST3K
    -The Naked Gun movies

I think I am a freak amongst women, because I love the Stooges, Monty Python and the Naked Gun movies, too.

Of course, I spent most of my time hanging around guys in high school - Dungeons and Dragons was not played by the ultra girly girls I went to school with.

    *********************

I had some inadvertent laughs at the expense of the guys though. A pretty girl went by one time while my buddies and I were at a local Denny's. With the exception of me, there was whiplash around our table. My friend Steve, who was otherwise an intelligent guy nudged me and said, "Didn't you see her? Wow!"

    I said, "Yeah, so?"

Steve said, "What's wrong with you.... oh." He got a round of forehead slaps from the other guys, who were laughing their asses off.

I saw a good looking police officer walk towards the smoking section dining room another time, and I got whiplash. Good Old Steve piped up with, "Where is she? That cop's in the way!"

    *********************

I don't know any other explanation for it. I have always found "chick flicks" to be the most overwrought, overemotional, over manipulative crap, and the same goes for romance novels. These never have had any kind of relevance to my life.

Perhaps a country song by a new artist named Gretchen Wilson sums it up best:

"I'm a redneck woman, I ain't no high class broad..."

    > Women seem more likely than men to enjoy a good joke, mainly because they don't always expect it to be funny.

Isn't being funny the purpose of a joke?

Sorry to be Socratic but... is a not-funny joke still a joke?

Lynda-Marie, I would almost expect you to have that type of sense of humor if you are posting here (at the HTF, and especially in the After Hours section). I would say that a large percentage of the few women (who do post here) also have that same type of sense of humor.

I would guess and say that this "male" humor is more of a "Geek" humor. Most people who post on message boards have this "geek" in them. And since the geek world is mostly male dominated, it would make sense that there would be a type of "male" humor.but is that even possible? Isn't a 'not-funny' joke similar to a 'living-corpse'? [IMG]

In other words, if it's not funny, then it's not a joke.
