Posting over in the Feedback section, Parker pointed out that this weekend was my four-year anniversary with HTF!

    Hooray for me! [IMG]

Wow, crazy. Back in 2001 I was an impoverished graduate student, struggling to find traction on my thesis. And I was wondering if I could ever buy a new TV. I tumbled onto HTF as I was researching some new AV equipment.

I learned about creating matte to mask the letter-boxed protion of my 27" TV. I don't see that discussed around here these days, but that was the single most cost effective upgrade I made. (I still intend to make a matte for my HD Wega.)

I learned about a "glitch" in Circuit City's pricing that dropped an $800 Onkyo to about $600. I printed the online ad out and took it in and made the purchase, getting my first (and current) Dolby Digital receiver. I defrayed the cost with my $300 tax refund (so, that was maybe 2002?). And it had DPL II, which I am so glad I got. Love that feature!

Ah, yes, here's the watershed day, completing my life as a student.

After getting a job, I used HTF to research TVs, choosing my Sony Wega CRT.

More recently, I've used it to help a former roommate to find his new TV.

And this weekend, I bought Bambi, on the recommendation of an HTF reviewer.

Thanks to all of those who created and maintain HTF, and to those who make it a good place to relax, learn, and enjoy [IMG]

Mine? I thought it still was. Or do you mean Mr. Grall's? (I've got signatures turned off, currently.)

Hey, DaveF, funny you should mention widescreen mattes because that's exactly the first thing I learned about when I joined this site back in 2002.[IMG]

That's how you tell the older ones when they have no "member since" by their names.

    DaveF (or any other PhDs):

Excluding teaching at the university level, what are the benefits of earning a PhD? Unlimited opportunities? Large salaries?

I start grad school next summer (Business Finance).[IMG]

Depends on in what field and on what you want to do.

In the sciences, a Ph.D. is required to lead a lot of the more important lab groups in industry. It is required in most fields to teach at the college level. For some people, it is just for a sense of personal accomplishment.

But it really depends on the field and what you want to do.

Holy sh*t! I just stumbled across this thread and looked at my own profile... lo and behold, today is my 5 year anniversary!

Not to detract from your thread, DaveF... I just thought that that was a little freaky.
