I'm surprise that no one has started a thread about this fine film. IMO, it's a really good film. The movie is about an aimless young woman that joined the Marines and became a dog handler and served a tour of duty in Iraq. Her dog was a German Shepherd named Rex. The film is about their journey together and then their separation when she served out her enlistment while Rex was redeploy again. Megan is kind of a mess, but she found herself with Rex. It was her relationship with Rex that saved her life in more ways than one. The final reconciliation of their relationship is what makes this film for me. This film hit me more emotionally than say A Dog's Purpose. Perhaps because this film is based on a real person and her dog. Another reason is because it's about our servicemen/women and the animals that served their country. Kate Mara portrays Megan Leavey and she's very good in this role. I'll confess that I did tear up a couple times during this film.

I've seen the trailer for it in front of a couple of other films I've gone to. It looks interesting, but I'm not sure it is a film that I need to see in a theatre.

It doesn't seem to be doing all that well Box Office-wise. I wonder if people are getting burnt out on these Iraq war themed films?

You can chalk that up, at least on my part, for having never heard of this film. Is this a straight to video / straight to cable release, or is this getting a theatrical release? I have not seen a single trailer, television commercial, poster, review, press coverage, etc.

Right. I heard of this for the first time just a few days ago (in a short newspaper blurb).

This one's in my (and Peg's) wheelhouse as she writes consistently about the human/animal bond. I'd like to be sure to see it in the theater...if it lasts long enough.

Thanks for posting the trailer, Robert.

It is a theatrical release. It does not seem to have gotten very good promotion.

Yeah, that's weird, this one just totally missed my radar. I usually am very good at being at least aware of what's coming out even if I don't make it out to the theaters, and this one just snuck up on me.

Well there's probably no cgi, no super hero, no Golden Gate being blown up...you know...all those things required to make a good movie these days. ;)

It's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The studio doesn't believe in it, so they don't support it. It fails at the box office. Studio execs are affirmed in their decision.

I read Roeper's review a few days ago. It sounds good to me and I want to see it, but I don't know if I will see it in the theater.

It got a pretty wide release in nearly 2000 theaters, but it's a small studio that probably doesn't have much for promotion and advertising. I did see a couple of TV advertisements, but I couldn't have told you what the movie was about before reading this thread, so they didn't have much impact. The same studio just released "The Lost City of Z" a couple months ago.

Did any of you see the video that comes after the trailer with the real Megan Leavey and Rex? One more thing about this film that I liked was how they showed the bonding between Megan and Rex. As to the promotion of this film, like somebody stated earlier in this thread, it's a film from a small studio so it doesn't have the backing from a Warner, Disney or Fox.

It's the reason why I went to see it instead of waiting on its Blu-ray release. I like supporting small human interest films. Such films need our support instead of throwing our dollars away at some of these major films with no soul or message.

Robert:

Is there much violence in the film? I'm going to try and convince Peg to see it with me this weekend, but I'll get in big trouble if I get her there and it turns out to be a "war movie" (in terms of lots of violence).

Well, frankly, it doesn't even need to come close to SPR for me to get into trouble.

But the description at your link, Alf, makes me think it'll be okay. She'll just need to hike up her big girl pants! :D

I read that Megan and her dog are together until both are wounded. How that's portrayed, I can't tell you. She is a soldier and the dog is a war dog so...

Mike,

There is a fire fight scene that isn't graphic like the Normandy scene in Saving Private Ryan. It's a tense scene, but it only lasts about 5-10 minutes, but it's important for telling their story.
