I went to radioshack today and saw a spool of 16-gauge megacable in both round and flat versions. I have also heard that getting 14-gauge cable from HD is good. Which is better?

Several speaker sites recommend buying the gauge based on the run-length:

    1-10 ft: 16 ga
    11-20 ft: 14 ga
    20+ ft: 12 ga

So you need THICKER wire for the long runs.

Most of us buy a spool of 12 ga and use it everywhere. Keeps from having lots of different sized left-overs.

A few other questions we should dispose of:

    - Trim your speaker wires to length. You dont need to make them all the same size. Add a foot or so for "play" and so you can yearly trim the ends when they become oxidized.

    - Bare wire/banana plugs/spades all sound the same. I really like the ease of the dual banana plugs from Radio Shack. The xxx-308 dual bananas make it easy to do a neat wire job. Buy 1 set and take them home to make sure they fit your binding posts (the spaceing is not universal). The dual bananas stick out about 3" so I also use the single-bananas xxx-306 for behind the receiver.

    Hope this helps
