Is there a way to do the mechanical focus of the CRTs with the screen ON?? I've tried doing it looking into the CRTs, but can't get it quite accurate enough without putting the screen on and off every 5 seconds.

Is there a better way? Through the rear of the TV perhaps?

    Thanks!

Yes. Loosen up the wing nut on the lense. Then tie a long piece of string around the wing nut and drape it over the front of the TV. Put the screen back on. Then you can pull on the the strings to adjust the focus. Once you have focus, take the screen back off and tighten up the wingnuts. Make sure you get them pretty tight or they will loosen up as I found out.

You can also remove and rotate the lenses 180 degrees so that the wing nuts are facing rearward. Then remove the back panel of the set and you'll see another panel that you can remove to access the lenses. Using a mirror, look at the screen while reaching behind to adjust the focus.
