Can you get the edges of the mdf smooth enough"sono sub" to look good

for the outer layer,or should i use different wood for the out layer.I'm just going to be painting it black but i want a nices finish on it?thanks

It takes some work, but it can be done. The edges of MDF will absorb much more paint or finish materials than the flat surfaces. Applying a few coats of primer or sanding sealer to the edges with light sanding in between will give you a smooth surface for painting.

If you apply paste wood filler to the edges with a damp sponge or brush, you will have a lot less finishing to do later on.
