It's official, Sir Ian takes over from Richard Harris.
Poor Christopher Lee - I was rooting for him to end up with a good guy role for a change.
Either him or Ian are excellent choices though.
IMDB's source is The Sun. I'll wait for a WB press release before believing it, but very cool if true. I'm with Lou though, I think Lee would have been most interesting in the role. He's proven he's got the commanding presence when needed, and it would have been awesome to see how he handled the softer moments.
Good news, indeed! Kudos to McKellan for snagging roles in three popular film series (LOTR, X-Men, and now Harry Potter). While Harris will be missed, McKellan is certainly a worthy candidate for the role of Dumbledore. I'm sure Harris would approve. On with the show, they say!
Update - The Sun proven wrong again.
From Sir Ian's offical site, mckellan.com, dated 26.12.02:
IMDB's rumour mill is about as reliable as Jlo's marriage vows so I'd treat it as bull until confirmation shows up elsewhere. IMDB is a great site for looking up movie information, but they're damaging their credibility with these gossip and "scoop" bits. If it is true (just in case), I won't feel sorry for Christopher Lee. I'd feel sorry for Richard Attenborough, who really, REALLY wanted the part, and would have been brilliant in it.
If you'll notice, the article on McKellan.com is dated 11/14, and the story on IMDB says that he was signed right before Christmas. Therefore, I'd say that until a NEW denial is posted, nothing is certain
Rumour or not, I think Ian McKellan is pretty good for the role. I don't think Christopher Lee would be suitable, considering his voice is too deep and nothing raspy like McKellan.
I dunno. I think he's heading into over-exposure territory.
I agree. I think McKellan is one of the best in the business, but I'd keep it down to 2 major franchises if I were him.
A question: are you guys putting McKellan's supposed casting in a positive light on the basis that he simply played a wizard in a different film series? I sincerely hope you aren't.
I still think Max Von Sydow or Richard Attenborough would have made a decent Dumbledore. Ian Mckellan is good but brings too much to the role. What with his recent success with the LOTR and X-Men movies. Oh well.
I think McKellan's facial features, especially under a full beard, are closer to Harris' than Lee's. Lee's nose is too skinny and long, not rounded like the others.
Whether or not this is true I do not know but I do know that Ian McKellan, to me, is the obvious and best choice. If he hasn't signed yet he should do so soon.
Exactly what it says. I'm getting the feeling that most (not all) of the people that are saying "great choice" to McKellan's reported casting are doing it simply because he played Gandalf.
McKellan is a great actor, and can even make rather blah movies like Apt Pupil, Bent and The Shadow watchable. But there's just something that prevents me from seeing him as a good Dumbledore. But it's not like I'm going to protest or anything if the casting news is true.
