Just have to say I finally got around to making some mattes for my Sony XBR400 and it is a nice improvement.
I used some luan board (spelling?) and some speaker grill cloth with use of some spray adhesive.
Velcro tape fastens them to the TV so I can make the adjustments for the different aspect ratios.

It does make a heck of a difference on a 4x3 TV, doesn't it.

For my 4:3 set the hassle wasn't worth it (move them around everytime you watched something, not to mention all the junk you have to have stuck to the TV). The results were minimal at best as well.
