Well at least their not full screen..I wasn't expecting to much these arn't exactly classics. For my 27" and 32" and simple set up I'm sure these will be fine.
Damn, I was looking forward to this. I feel like throwing one Sony exec from a speeding hovercraft. Then drowning another in my under-floor bedroom pool.
Just my two cents but I remember these Helm flicks looking pretty mediocre when I saw them in theatres in the 1960s. The Bond films always seemed and looked elegant but the tacky photography of the Helm films seemed to match the cheesy quality of the movies themselves which was part of the enjoyment. Maybe it's me but I'm a bit relieved to know they don't look spiffed up and eye popping.
They look pretty good to me. Personally, I look on this release as one of those lucky-to-get-anything ones. Given the on/off nature of the release and the sketchy details we've had, the movies are obviously pretty low on Sony's roll-of-honour, so that they'd be bare-bones releases was no surprise. I'm glad they've included the preview trailer tails on the movies, and that they're fully subtitled. That they're anamorphic is a genuine relief as I wouldn't have been surprised by a 4:3 open matte release as per the previous VHS release. If they'd turned up any kind of vintage (or new) support material, I'd have been amazed.
I wasn't expecting a Lowery Digital restoration, so I'm not disappointed. Or at least I won't be once my copy ships.
I'm not too disappointed either, especially since I have a 27" TV and the screencaps look fine to me. I'm just happy to see these released on DVD and in OAR.
I had the VHS and Laserdiscs releases and the screen shots look like moderate improvements on those and at least they are Widescreen. So I'm not worried this release should be what I was expecting and the best the films have looked since their original release.
