From Reuters' StudioBrief:

Cheaper HDTV Coming

Japanese consumer electronics giant Matsushita on Tuesday unveiled a new single-chip technology for high-definition TV sets that potentially could reduce the costs of producing them, making them more attractive to consumers who have been put off by their high prices. The company said that it plans to begin shipping the new chips at the beginning of August.
Hopefully this will be the kick in the pants HDTV needs to take off like a bullet. I know I'm still on the fence with pricing. It won't take much more for me to take the plunge.

I wonder if and when we'll see an effect.
