I asked this in another thread, but it seemed to get lost in with the main question.
Is there any real difference between matrix 6.1 and the official blessed EX sound?
The Denon 3802 is matrix 6.1.
    The Onkyo 797/898 are EX.
In this thread I am not asking which reciever is better just is EX just a logo or is there really a difference?
    Thanks,
    Mark
    PS this forum is great.

IMHO no. The differences would be minor and practically unnoticeable. That being said THX EX uses Pro Logic for the extraction where other units may use their own proprietary decoding solution...but in the end its all similar matrix decoding.

Agree with both the posts above. I think the only difference is the way sound is processed in THX. I believe however that the extraction of the matrix sound is done very similarly in THX-EX and DD-EX.

The processing is done exactly the same. The only difference is that one has asked for(and payed) for the THX blessing, and the other sees no reason to pass on the additional licensing fee to the consumer.

THX Surround EX activates all the standard THX features including a re-equalization function for the rear surrounds.
Like the RE-EQ for the front channels this is hopefully controlled by the "x-curve" flag in the Dolby Digital bitstream.
