I was browsing over at DVDTalk and saw a thread about this.
http://www.nintendo.com/e32k3/mariokart_feat.html (screen shots are here as well)

he Mushroom Kingdom just got a whole lot more hectic as Mario & Co. double up for furious kart racing!
The latest in the acclaimed Mario Kart series is here, and this time, you won't be racing alone! Each kart holds two racers, so choose from Mario, Luigi, Peach, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Yoshi, Birdo, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Koopa, and Paratroopa and pair them up any way you see fit. The character in front handles the driving duties, while the character in the rear doles out damage with six normal items and eight special items that only specific characters can use. Racers can swap places at any time, so switch it up on the fly to make the best use of your items as you tear around curves and over huge elevation changes.

WOW!

The screenshots look amazing. Ever since Miyamoto stated sometime last year that the next Mario Kart game was going to be a little different, I've been wondering what exactly was going to change. The idea of having two characters per kart never even crossed my mind. Very nice Nintendo! :D

I really like the idea of being able to swap characters while racing. Also with each character having unique weapons in the game, it seems the strategy element in this game has shot through the roof! :emoji_thumbsup:

Diddy Kong is in the game! Plus long time favorite Koopa Troopa has returned! I can't wait to see this game in motion. I can't wait to own this game! :D

I just can't wait for someone to write the software so we can play this over the internet. I'll be a very happy boy then. There will be tons of people rushing out to get that network adapter then.

Yesterday I find out about Rogue Squadron 3 and now this....Nintendo must not want me to graduate next year. Of course, I thought there was a conspiracy my freshman year concocted by the imfamous Captain Morgan and Mr. Jack Daniels ;)

Wow. How the hell does Nintendo come up with so many original ideas to make old games cool? This games looks gorgeous and the idea is so cool.

This all begs the question, how can you play as a single player? Do you control the game like in Mario Kart 64?

I would just guess that you can play the game like you did the N64 version, and then hit the Z button, or use the c-stick to control what the other person is doing.

Just a guess.

I would guess that the 2nd player can normally fire any one of the weapons at will, but playing one-player, you will have to cycle through them like the previous titles. There has to be more than weapons control for the 2nd player, though.

Boy, with Rogue Squadron 3 and Mario Kart Double Dash, Nintendo is really getting desperate. I don't know if they're going to be in business much longer.

I REALLY hope you forgot to put a smiley there. These two games aren't last ditch efforts to make money, they've been in development for a couple years and are nearing the point where they can be shown to the public.

I figured that one was sooo over the top that it didn't need the smiley. It's exclusive first- and third-party games like this that tell me Nintendo is going to be fine.
