I have the Marantz AV7702MKii Pre/Pro but I am assuming other Marantz [and Denon] products will be the same. There is a setting under Setup > Inputs called "Source Level." The product manual has this to say regarding the control but I am wondering how [and if] others use it. Cranking it up does produce louder output at a given master volume setting but should I do this when there is plenty of headroom already on tap?

Source Level
This function corrects the playback level of the selected input source’s audio input.

Make this setting if there are differences in the input volume levels between the different sources.

I wouldn’t increase the input gain unless the source component in question (for some reason) has a noticeably lower output in relation to the others. Just arbitrarily increasing it for no good reason could result in clipping the inputs.

Thank you, Wayne. That's exactly what I was concerned about.

John, that's just for source level matching. It doesn't seem to have much use with digital sources, but in the analog days it was nice because the relative output of different playback devices could vary quite a bit, depending on the gain of their output stage. So, one device might consistently have a much higher or lower output than another, requiring you to make big volume level changes between the devices. That let you even them out. If you connect an analog playback device, you might find you want to adjust the input level of it, but who's doing that these days?
