MAMA'S FAMILY was an American sitcom that was based off the popular "Family" sketches from THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW, which aired on CBS for eleven seasons. MAMA'S FAMILY was an NBC sitcom originally, where it aired from January 22, 1983 to April 7, 1984, producing just thirty-episodes before getting axed because of disappointing ratings.
The show was a surprise hit in summer reruns, and producer Joe Hamilton (ex-husband of Carol Burnett) decided to bring the series back in first-run syndication in 1986. MAMA'S FAMILY debuted in syndication on September 27, 1986, and went on to produce another ninety-five episodes before officially ending on February 24, 1990.
Vicki Lawrence stars as Thelma "Mama" Harper, the smart-mouthed matriarch of a dysfunctional Southern family. Ken Berry played her well-meaning, but dingy son, Vinton Harper, and Dorothy Lyman played her sassy and sexy daughter-in-law, Naomi Oates Harper. Over the course of the series, the show featured both Rue McClanahan and Betty White in regular roles, while both Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman guest-starred when the series was still with NBC. After the move to syndication, all these cast members were gone (although White appeared once during the syndicated version), and they were replaced with Beverly Archer as crafty neighbor and Mama's good friend, Iola Boylen, and Allan Kayser as Mama's delinquent grandson, Bubba Higgins.
