I've got a friend who is finishing out his basement and wants to make a respectable, not cheap but not expensive, home theater.

Right now I've been thinking the following:

    Denon 1803
    Energy Take 5.2 Speakers
    Denon 5-Disc DVD Player

he's found a 57" Sony Widescreen he likes.

Sound like a decent system? I've not seen much on the new 1803.

Yup, that's a quite decent system. You might also encourage him to audition the Audio Research HC6 speaker suite. I think they reproduce the bulk of the soundfield a tad more seamlessly and transparently than the Take 5.2 system. Too, they are aesthetic knockouts.

How much is he willing to spend on speakers?

I asked him and he said 'not as much as yours, but I don't want cheap ones either'

    So I'm guessing between $700 - $1200.

I'd skip the Denon DVD player. I have not read good things about them here in the A/V sources forum.

He can look at accessories4less and think about the acoustic hi res stuff.
    I own the ar4c, ar11's, ar17 and ar112ps.

I enjoy everything...sub could be better but the rest at the price you can't beat it. They are an authorized dealer of AR equipment also.
