I just got this new CD player, a Magnavox MAS-80. Nothing fancy (though much fancier than my older player), I'm not a big audiophile. Anyway, I was trying to play a Stones CD-R of mine, and during the first track I get this thumping or vibrating noise along with some static. Towards the end of the track it stops and I haven't noticed it on other tracks. The CD has no more scratches than your average oft-played disc. It plays fine on my older CD player, my discman, and my DVD player. The CD-R itself is an old Fuji, which are supposed to be good quality.

A friend of mine has a similar CD player (maybe even the same one), and I played a different disc of mine on there one time and the same problem occurred. Any suggestions?

Some players are more sensitive to scratch-related read errors than others. The trick is to make it such that even your oft-played CDs are scratch-free (which is not a problem; treat your discs carefully).
