Universal Pictures has signed on to be the home for a biopic of iconic singer Madonna, who will direct her own story from a script she is writing with Oscar-winning Juno scribe Diablo Cody. Madonna will produce the film with Pascal Pictures’ Amy Pascal. Madonna will not act in the film, but she will lead a search for a young actress who will play her in the formative stages of a disruptor’s career that set the template for all the diva singing stars who’ve followed, from Beyonce to Lady Gaga.

The film will tell the story of Madonna’s growth into a chart topping juggernaut and style icon with the staying power to become the all-time bestselling female artist — 335 million records worldwide — and the highest grossing solo touring numbers ever. She has been on the cover of more than 4700 magazines through her career. She and Cody have been very open on social media about their progress on the film, and even the other day she suggested the film might be called Live To Tell, a song from the 1986 film At Close Range.

I don't think Madonna's life has the same cachet for a bio-pic, as with Elton John or Queen. While those artists continued to be reasonably popular and respected late into their careers, Madonna has become kind of a joke, IMO, in her later (recent) years.

It'll be very interesting. Neither she nor Diablo Cody are ones to mince words or thoughts in their works and if Madonna has proven one thing in her career, it's that she's incredibly smart, creative and unafraid to push boundaries. She also has a superb eye. Let's wait and see.

She has had an unbelievable career and there is plenty of material for a visual and entertaining movie about her 80s/90s heyday. Her directing is probably a bad idea and will lead to criticism. She should let someone more established take the reins to lend it better credibility.

Yeah, while she has led an interesting life, In Bed With Madonna was pretty horrendous, while I Want To Tell You A Secret showed a person who had grown up significantly.
Not sure a self directed bio-pic is the best next step ...
And I am a Madonna fan.

I guess she’s smart in the sense that most of her self promotion “worked”. Though I never found most of her stunts all that clever. Most of it seemed to me like engaging in soft core porn and using religious imagery to role up people. And then just recently that bizarre coronavirus bath video. But again, kudos I guess because it got the desired reaction.
