Mad Men dvd packaging, anyone got pics? (1 Viewer)

So it's released tomorrow but has anyone seen the 'Zippo lighter' packaging up close yet? What's it like? How are the discs held? Are they going to be protected or does the fancy packaging simply look great whilst being disc unfriendly? (which is something I detest - like with the new '24 Season 1' set).
It's a great idea this design but I don't want to risk getting scratched and scuffed discs!

I saw the Zippo case at CC today and it's definitely cool (it's faux metal cardboard so it dents, beware), but you're probably right on the Blu-ray not featuring the limited edition packaging. They didn't have it, either.

If I originally saw a broadcast show in HD, I'm not going to purchase a DVD for that show on anything less. This costly policy keeps me from buying many newer shows, true, but this series, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Deadwood, and The Sopranos may be the exceptions.

I am not sure I understand this statement. The one I bought is definitely metal (albeit flimsy - slightly better than the BB Popeye tin IMO.) It has a partial cardboard outer sleeve (similar to the Ultimate Superman set), but the case is metal throughout.

Well, it's kind of hard to describe, so bear with me. When you open the case (it is hinged on the side, so it opens like a giant Zippo lighter) the four discs are slid into evenly spaced slots that allow them to display in cascading fashion, i.e. disc 4 appears to be higher in the case than disc 1. I am not sure what kind of material is used for the slots (it may be plastic covered in some fabric-like substance) but for me anyway, the discs fit snugly in the slots. When I first opened the case, I was worried that the discs might be scuffed because of how they are partially exposed in the case, but they all looked perfect. I suggest that if you are going to get the collector's packaging, make sure no discs are rattling before you buy it. FWIW, I picked up 3 or 4 different cases when I bought mine trying to find one without dents, but I did not hear anything rattling in any of them.

Pitchman (Gary) beat me to the punch. His described the packaging perfectly.

However, I found it difficult to carefully remove all of the discs. (Disc 1 was the toughest.) So, after checking to make sure all discs were clean and playable, I did something that would "void the warranty". I placed each disc in separate slim jewel CD cases.

Then, I removed the "plastic fabric-like" holder from the bottom of the lighter and the CLEAR plastic from the top (NOT the silver gray plastic rim that helps close the lighter). The holders are secured to the tin on each side by little sticky circles which were relatively easy to disable. The "plastic fabric-like" holder took a bit of effort to dislodge but the tin was easy to pop back into place.

With the four slim cases and promo info standing in the lighter, it closes easily. The cardboard outside backing does not fit in the box. You will notice there will be a little extra space (not even enough to fit another slim case). If that doesn't bother you, this may be a viable solution to having unprotected discs in this great collection.
