Am I missing something? I must be.

Pricing out a 13" Macbook Air and Pro for my girlfriend.

Both come with 16GB ram and 512SSD

Both are priced at $1,699. Am I missing the obvious here?

I think it's an issue with the website. Looking at the Canadian Apple site and it shows these prices:

Nope...

Price is still the same for the two models on the U.S. site.

Now it's starting to make sense.

Let me see if things have changed since my original post. Off to the Apple website...
The US site does appear to show the same price for the same configuration.

Something to consider as to why both models have an identical price point:

A few things the M2 Air has over the 13 Pro:
  • Magsafe charger
  • Slightly bigger and better display
  • 1080p vs 720p webcam
  • Better speakers (I think)
  • No touchbar

So, you have the new M2 AIR that has many new features that were not implemented in the M2 PRO.

Basically, you have a more feature-rich AIR that you are putting up against a more tired PRO but with slightly better processing ability due to its thermal cooling capacity.

Both machines are pretty much aligned with each other which is why their price points are exactly the same.

I think customers are ultimately being pushed to the AIR or the M1 14" MBP at a higher price point.

U.S. Apple Web site is showing
  • $999 for M1 MacBook Air (7-core GPU, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD)
  • ----------
  • $1199 for M2 MacBook Air (8-core GPU, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD)
  • ----------
  • $1299 for M2 MacBook Pro (10-core GPU, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD)
  • ----------
  • $1499 for M2 MacBook Air (10-core GPU, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD)
  • $1499 for M2 MacBook Pro (10-core GPU, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD)
The maximum RAM for the M2 models is up, slightly, to 24 GB. (Custom-ordering 24 GB adds $400 to the price.)

The M2 Air, on paper, has gotten a substantial speaker upgrade over its M1 counterpart. I don't know how well it compares to the speaker systems on the 13" M1 and M2 MacBook Pros, but that used to be a differentiator, and it's probably less of one now. The headphone jacks on all of the M2 laptops gained support for high-impedance headphones.

The M2 Air got a MagSafe charging port, and a 1080p camera. The 13" M2 MacBook Pro did not get either one – a curious omission. The 13" M2 MacBook Pro retains the Touch Bar and a small battery life advantage.

You could almost combine the MacBook Air and 13" MacBook Pro lines, into a single MacBook Air line, by adding a custom-order option where you could choose whether you wanted a Touch Bar.
