I've had a couple of recent DVDs that have started pixelating/freezing on me I guess from disc rot. I thought it might be worthwhile to try and rip the disc using Handbrake or something else to see if I could somehow "save" the disc. I will also try to see if an older DVD player fares better playing them back.

I haven't tried ripping in a very long time. Does anyone have Handbrake (or something newer) working on an M1 Mac with Sequoia 15.1?

I don't think you can rip using Handbrake. A lot use MakeMKV. It's Silicon compatible.

I’m on an old Mac Pro, the mid 2012 tower before the Cylinder Mac Pro. So my machine is limited to High Sierra. With that said, I use both Handbrake and MakeMKV. I primarily use MakeMKv to rip both DVD and blu ray. What I like about MakeMKV is that it makes a bit for bit copy. So there is no compression. The playback of the file will look identical to the disc. I feel that’s a better way to archive you discs. And it makes it a lot easier and more fun to play back without using a disc in a player. You can stream the file onto an AppleTV or iPad.

I will update to a new Mac with the M2 or M4 chip, so I’ll be interested in how the ripping goes on a newer system.

It's exactly the same. Same software and all. HandBrake runs about 10x as fast, though.

I had MakeMKV and Handbrake running fine today on my M1 MacStudio. I wasn't testing for speed but both ran smoothly.

The two Dvds I have known issues with on my Panasonic DP-UB820-K are The Departed and Blood Diamond. I was able to backup Blood Diamond without issue and it also played without pixelating using the MacOS's built in player. The Departed however kept hanging when I tried to play it. I gave it a go to see if I could even back it up, but MakeMKV came back with a read error. Looking closely at the disc you can see a wave of discoloration that varies around the disc.

So perhaps the UB820 has issues with some older DVDs, but The Departed looks hosed.
