M$K 55 speaker placement (1 Viewer)

I'm helping a friend put together a system.
He's decided upon M&K 55 speakers all around with the 75 sub.
He's buying a full entertainment center cabinet. One of those huge things about 8 feet wide. I suggested that the speakers should be placed on stands on either side of the cabinet and just forward a little. I told him that we would have to experiment with it a little.
The guy in the store told him that these speakers would sound just fine in the upper shelf behind the grill cloth that comes with the cabinet. And they probably will sound, "just fine". I'm thinking that the stands would be better.
I would like any feedback from my friends here please.

i would agree with your suggestion. placing any speaker in the cabinet has the potential for making the sound boomy and muddy.
