According to dvdfile.com, not only the Altman film will come out that day, but also the first season of the TV series:

Cool. It plays much better without the canned laugh track anyway.

I noticed that the retail for this set is only $40. How many episodes were there in the first season, and how many discs will they take up?

That will be a nice birthday present to myself. Well actually, January 8 is one day after my birthday, but close enough to still celebrate.

Excellent! Fox just keeps putting out the good stuff. I can't think of any other studio that comes close to them in terms of respecting both their film & tv catalog (lots of nice quality releases at good prices). If only the others would follow suit...

I'd buy MASH season one for $40. Looks like they've got a winner there.

If FOX would just acquire the rights from Columbia to release Married With Children on DVD on that same day I will DEFINITELY be in a state of complete awe. [IMG]

I'll definitely be picking up the movie and the series release sounds pretty good, too!
    ------------------
He thought on homeland, the big timber, the air thin and chill all the year long. Tulip poplars so big through the trunk they put you in mind of locomotives set on end. He thought of getting home and building him a cabin on Cold Mountain so high that not a soul but the nighthawks passing across the clouds in autumn could hear his sad cry. Of living a life so quiet he would not need ears. And if Ada would go with him, there might be the hope, so far off in the distance he did not even really see it, that in time his despair might be honed off to a point so fine and thin that it would be nearly the same as vanishing.

    Outstanding!
I look over at my Columbia House tapes and do the math required for the 24 episodes (app. $25 for 3 episodes = app. $200 per season on VHS), then look at the price for the DVD set ($40)- tears of joy follow. Well, maybe not, but I am extremely happy.

I didn't have time to say anything but "YES!" last night, but the fact is I am very excited about this.
If Fox hadn't gone the extra inch and provided a giggle-less track, I wouldn't have bothered with the tv series at all. I've always wanted to see my favorite tv show without a sound engineer informing me where the funny bits are.
I have problems with some episodes of the show, so I may not buy all of them when the whole 10+ seasons are out, but I can definately see myself picking up seasons 1, 2 and 3.
And of course Altman's M*A*S*H is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Living in the UK, I grew up with the version without the laugh track. When I eventually saw one episode with the canned laughter I had to switch it off after five minutes because it was so grating. Believe me guys, you really cannot appreciate the performers' comic timing until you see this without the laugh track.

Like ChristopherM, I too watched 5 mins of an episode with the laughter track (must have been the same episode?). Having been weaned on a 'silent' track, I just couldn't take it and switched it off. For me, it totally destroyed the dark comedy, and completely ruined the comic timing.
I heard some years later that the BBC had accidentally aired the wrong version on that occasion.

the best seasons IMHO are the ones with Maclean Stephenson (Henry Blake) and Wayne Rogers (Trapper John).
I am running out to pick this up the day it comes out.
