My Epson projector started making a loud grinding/rattling sound when connected via HDMI to my cable box. I thought it was dying, so borrowed the same projector from a friend. Hooked it up, and the new one made the same sound. The sound is coming from the back right side of the projector.

So I connected it to different inputs (e.g. computer, Apple TV) via HDMI, and it didn't make the sound. I connected it to my cable box with the red, orange and yellow cables, and no sound again. So it is something about connecting it to the cable box with HDMI specifically.

Anyone have any idea what might be going on here?

I've got real bad news for you. It's a major issue with the 5000 series... And it has nothing to do with what input it is connected to. The Cinema Filter uses a really shitty plastic piece that is notorious for failing.

If you are under warranty, get it fixed asap. If you are not under warranty call Epson and they will recommend a n authorized repair center.

The guy they recommended to me in Baltimore did a good job, wound up costing me $450 and hasn't been a problem since.

My projector is the 730HD. I'm quite sure it has to do with the input, since it invariably made the sound when connected to the cable box via HDMI, and did not when connected to other inputs or with another cable. I watched the whole Super Bowl connected via RCA and never heard it. But every time I tried to connect with HDMI (I tried several cables, and even ran it through an HDMI splitter hub) it made the noise. I really can't think of any reason for it. This one has me stumped.
