It's an extremely loud noise from all speakers that lasts less than one second. It happens sometimes when the Denon changes from PL-2 to Dolby D while moving from menus to the movie on DVD. It also happened last night during a layer change.

I'm not so sure about Dolby Digitial, but with DTS encoded sources, the manual warns (pg 42) that you may hear a loud noise at the beginning of playback or while searching if the unit is set in the AUTO input mode. They recommend switching to DTS input mode instead. I personally have never experienced this problem.

I owned a Denon 3300 and now own a 3802 and have not experienced any loud noises. Once in a while there is a very teeny click or something but for the vast majority of the time, noise free.
It seems pretty obvious this is some kind of signal loss or signal acquisition situation. Have you checked your connection cable? Made sure everything is plugged in tightly?
Is your DVD player new too? There have been numerous threads over the last couple of years on the fact that some DVD player/receiver combinations work together more poorly than others. You might try substituting a different player and see how that goes on the same DVDs.

Eric, it happened on TPM when changing from the menu to play movie (switching from PL2 to Dolby D) and it occurred again on Memento at the layer change.
Phil, I do leave it set to auto and now that you mention it I vaguely remember that passage in the manual (I read it honest :) ) I will look in to that.
Thanks for the input guys :)
