According to Musictap, August and September are going to be great months for Neil Young fans.

On the 19th of August, his newest album Greendale will be released on DVD-A day and date with the CD.

Then on September 23rd coming to DVD-A are:

    On the Beach
    Re-ac-tor
    Hawks & Doves
    American Stars 'N Bars

These are some great releases for DVD-A. Day and date releases and superstar artists mean great success for the format. This should provide a great case study for other artists (the Beatles?) looking to release back catalog on DVD-A.

His first album is the one that most needs to be released. It was a real nice record. It's one of the worst sounding CD's I've ever heard. I would not call these albums prime slices.

    Justin,

Isn't it equally likely there were no multi-track masters to work from to create Multi-channel mixes?

Since Warner has consistently delivered surround mixes this is a viable possibility as well.

If the results of Giant Steps are as good as the DAD of Blue Trane I'm all for it.

It is also possible that WB could contract out the stereo work to other smaller production facilities that have delivered high quality product in the past.

When CDs first arrived Neil Young was very critical of the way they sounded and of course he was right. So why is it taking forever for his catalog to be remastered for the first time while many artists have been remastered twice?
I want HDCDs in stereo before any of the fancy stuff. There was also talk of a massive anthology that never came to anything. We need to hide his bong and get him to work on this stuff.

Just to offer a contrasting viewpoint: While I agree that American Stars 'n Bars and Reactor are not Neil's best, I think Hawks and Doves might be a really interesting remaster. The first side has a really great cozy feeling, and it's some of his more unusual and experimental songwriting. Personally, I definitely give On the Beach my overwhelming vote for Most Underrated/ Inexplicably Ignored Neil Young album. There are some real jewels on this one.

I reiterate that that stereo remasters of Neil's catalog are the current priority. I'd like to have the dough for the best new equipment but there are other joys, like analog LPs of the type The Grateful Dead just released.

Are we sure these will be released on DVD-A? Aren't these just HDCD editions?

I find it hard to believe that Young would let Warner/Reprise issue Re-Ac-Tor on DVD-A before he let them issue Everybody Knows, Tonight's The Night, Zuma, Rust Never Sleeps, Freedom, Ragged Glory, Sleeps With Angel etc on DVD-A!

As for Hawks And Doves, 'The Old Homestead' would sound great in 5.1 dts! It has a great feel to it - the quavering saw and Neil's awesome picking!

When Reprise insisted on issuing Harvest on CD way back when, Young forced them to also issue "my best record" - Tonight's The Night.

I just think he shouldn't have bothered with the HDCD reissues and just put the missing 4 of 6 out on DVD-A. But really, I thought I'd have Everybody Knows, Tonight's The Night, Zuma and Rust Never Sleeps on DVD-A before Hawks And Doves and Re-Ac-Tor. And all this going out before any of the "Archives" boxed sets even being announced! [IMG]

I was quoting something that Neil himself says in Jimmy McDonough's biography, Shakey. I guess he's as misinformed as all of us! [IMG]

Ah, it's a great album, Tonight's The Night. I was listening to it last week. I got the Bristol Hippodrome tape a few weeks ago, and it's a whole other trip! Crazy shit, great gig - blow any multi-million dollar Pink Floyd lightshow away any day, kids! [IMG]

I can't wait for all his albums to be on DVDA.
