I am looking into buying new main speakers and a new center for my Yamaha HTR 5490, I can spend no more then $1000 on all three speakers and I would like to get some ideas of the models of speakers I should look at, recently I was looking at the JBL Studio 38II's and the JBL S center II, but I am also interested in Paradigm, Polk, and maybe some other that are not at my attention at this moment, any suggestions?

For $1000 you have TONS of options, how about B&W 602's? Or 601's or even 303's.

The JBL's are nice but I find them more of a budget speaker. Paradigm Studio 20's or Monitor 7's or something are probably in that budget as well.

I could be blowing smoke though, since $1000 USD is around $1500 CDN and for $1500 CDN you can get a lot of speakers!

    The 303's are $300 a pair and the 602's are $600 a pair.

I agree that you should be able to do real well for $1,000. I would look at least consider the following:

    B&W 602
    B&W Center (Don't know model#)

    Paradigm Monitor 7
    Paradigm CC-370

    Energy C-5
    Energy C-C1

    Swans Diva 4.1
Swans Diva CC (Forget the model#)

The Swans setup would run you a little more than $1,000 but I'm pretty sure that they throw in a free pair of Diva 2.1's that you could use for your surrounds.

Also, dont forget the Studio 20's from Paradigm, Almost any setup from Norh (except for the 6.1's), and if you are the buidling type, you can get a hell of a deal off speakers kits that are almost pre assembled (basically all you need is a scredriver, a soldering iron, and a brain). $1000 for three speakers is probably the price point where the greatest amount of choice is present, and you can rack your brain for weeks deciding which speakes you want. The best advice is to audition as many speakers as possible, and choose the ones that fit your needs.

How could a pair of mini monitors be $600? Do you mean 2 pairs? They should be around $300 a pair.

That's more than I paid for the three B&W 602s I have in my system for the front soundfield. TO my ears very few companies can compete with B&W at these price points, particularly the overachieving 601 and 602s.
