my Pioneer VSX-1021k died for the second time (this time out of warranty) so it's time for a new one. What is important to me:

1 - strong dynamic range compression. Pioneer had a basic DRC feature but it was not doing much.
2 - HDMI control: I want to be able to control receiver volume using my TV remote, and I want to do it at a rate that is faster than 0.5 dB per second (another issue with pioneer)
3 - HDMI return channel (I want smart TV apps to output audio back into the receiver)
4 - price range <$400

speaker setup is 5.1
input device: AppleTV 4gen
output: Vizio M series 4K smartTV

Sticking with Pioneer gives you a couple options, the Elite VSX 90 gives you all the options you are looking for. You can get it around 500 to 600 dollars and it is set up for future upgrades. The VSX 60 (I think) is a step down from the VSX 90 with similar functions for less.
