Hey all, I just saw the Frank Capra film Meet John Doe and I enjoyed it, so I went looking to see if it was on DVD.

Well, it is, in a few different versions.

So I wanna know if anybody knows which one is the one to get, or if there is a special edition coming out soon.

    Thanks a bunch.

*edit* Gosh darn it, the title of the thread should be "Looking For "Meet John Doe" on DVD".

This film is sadly in the public domain...

Find the Region 2 "Sanctuary" version which looks pretty good. I don't see Warner Home Video doing a DVD soon because it's public domain...

In 2000, Image Entertainment released a quite decent print of Meet John Doe from Hal Roach Studios. The catalogue number is HRS 9449. No one's jaw is going to drop over the quality but it's far superior to the public domain prints that are out there and it's as good if not better than any print you've seen on TV.

As Thomas stated, I've seen much worse than the Image release.

TCM shows what is proabably the best print of "Meet John Doe" you're ever going to see. Next time it's scheduled on TCM, record it. After all, it's public domain.

This film was originally 132 minutes but was cut by some 10 minutes for re-issues. Does anyone know if any of the DVDs are the full uncut version?

Avoid the Image version of Meet John Joe. The best version of Meet John Doe is from Sanctuary Entertainment. You can see screen comparisons here. The Image version looks blurry in comparison to the Sanctuary disc. Although, it's a UK release, it is NTSC, Region 0, so it will play on all North American players with no problem.

Plus, it's loaded with the following extras:

-English (captions), Deutsch, Español, Français (the Image version has none)
-Audio commentary by film historian Ken Barnes (includes archive comments by Frank Capra)
    -3 featurettes:
    Meet Mr. Cooper (16:37 min)
    Meet Miss Stanwyck (14:46 min)
    Meet Mr. Capra (18:20 min)
    -Supporting Cast & Crew
-Digital restoration of Meet John Doe (a before and after comparison) (01:51 min)
-Vintage Radio Promotion: (A) Sorry Wrong Number starring Barbara Stanwyck & Burt Lancaster, (B) For Whom The Bell Tolls starring Gary Cooper & Ingrid Bergman
    -Production background

You can get it here for about $18 or so.
