Hello! I am looking to build a set of three identical LFC speakers for my home theater. My room is fairly good size at 14.5' x 21' x 8.5', so I want a well performing speaker to match the volume of the room. I am using the Rotel 1066 Pre-Amp and RMB-1075 Power Amp. I am looking for a good MTM set, and it doesn't have to be a "kit" from a manufacturer. I have heard good reports (forums) about the Scan-Speak D2010/8513, but I have not heard it first hand. I was thinking about matching this tweeter with the Vifa P17WJ-00-08 or the Peerless 850122 woofers, which I have heard and liked. Let me know what you think or what you have worked with in the past.

How about a pair of these?

They use Hi-Vi Research M8a metal cone midwoofers and a Vifa XT25 tweeter. Center is a horizontal version. Note that the woofers are not shielded so use of bucking magnets and lining the center cabinet with sheet metal is necessary if it's going to be near a CRT

Those look great! I know your bias, but how do you think they sound (for home theater)? I have also heard good things about that tweeter also. Shielding won't be an issue, because I have a projector.
Thanks,
Shawn

Yes they sound very good, detailed, and revealing.

They were specifically design for HT use.

Note that they are a real 4 ohm load. So consider making them only if your receiver can handle 4 ohm speakers.

If you're interested email me for specifics and questions. We're remodeling the house so I answer email at the end of each day.

Regards
Thomas

Thomas,
Glad you posted :) I've been meaning to email you or Jon but have been super busy. I wanted to know if the XO changed any for the center? Also, when did you add the zobel to the HP? The XO I have doesn't have it. BTW (IIRC) I thought those woofers are shielded?

There's always been a zobel for the tweeter. There should have been a schematic in the files you have.

There's a misprint in the PE catalog. The smaller Hi-Vi drivers are available shielded, but the M8a isn't available shielded.

Completing Tibor's center got derailed due to some major remodeling at my place. His cab is finished and the XO is now completed too. We'll be doing the final assembly the 17th. We're going to test with the same XO as is used in the mains. If there are issues we'll make the necessary adjustments.

Thanks Thomas. I must have forgotten to download that one. Looking at my files I see there is one for the TM 2-way. Oops :b

I talked to Darren & I might be getting some M8n's to try out :)

I haven't listened to store bought speakers in 10yrs. I imagine these are stiff competition for speakers that retail for $3500-$5000.

For parts cost checkout the Parts Express website, they sell all the drivers. Throw in ~$250 for good XO parts. Then factor in your choice of raw MDF vs finished lumber.
