Don, are you making this a dedicated PS2 receiver? do you not have a current surround receiver?
If you want a cheap one, the make a 20 watt per/ch unit that matches the look of the ps2. dont know the brand though, i saw it on ebay. do you have speakers for this receiver? if you are looking for a dedicated surround package just for the ps2, i suggest Midiland www.midiland.com
I will be purchasing their ads 4000 for my decoder and volume controls. its not powered, but they sell a great little 5.1 setup that matches it.
if you are looking to integrate the ps2 into you existing HT, then I think you just need cables
~5 years ago, DD "ready" receivers did not have on board decoding, but you will be hard pressed to find a brand name receiver these days that does not have a built in Dolby Digital decoder. With the PS2, I don't think you have a choice, it must have a decoder if you want DD/DTS and you must use the digital output.
First thing you need to define is your budget. Without that, your question is too vague.
If it is just for the PS2, you may want to look into something like the Klipch Pro Media 5.1 computer speakers or some simliar speaker w/ dolby/dts decoders built into the speaker control unit. This would spare you the cost of speakers and a seperate receiver.
Don, since you want a dedicated 5.1 for the ps2 definately compare the klipsch to the midiland setup. my friend uses the klipsch for his htpc in his living room. theysound good for the small space
Don, this is a cached page but it has the info of one of the ps2 specific surround setups i mentioned above http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache...n&ie=UTF-8
well the klipsch would still get my vote
don, I looked at the klipsch promedia 5.1 and I didnt see anything about having a built in decoder. since you want this for ps2 dedicated again, go to www.midiland.com
they have seperate decoders and then you can get whatever speaker setup you want
