A few months ago a couple forum members helped me identify a young jazz singer named Lizz Wright after I heard her version of John Coltrane's Afro Blue on the radio.

I have since bought her CD, Salt, and it's quite good. Her contralto is solid, confident, sweet and sexy, and the music is elegant but passionate- there's real jazz in there (not just "jazz elements" like Norah Jones) and gospel, which is her background.

On Saturday I saw her perform and she just blew me away. She starts off with "Walk With Me, Lord," ending with an extended groove. Her band is real nice- sympathetic but engaging. Her stage presence is humble but powerful, and just sheer joy to watch and listen to. The whole performance was cleverly arranged, with even the solos being free but controlled and all part of the song.

If she comes your way, go see her. Bring a date.
