Is Halo supposed to be auto-updated to work online through the Live! service? I checked it out last night and I'm pretty sure it won't work (at least in the beta timeframe).

That's not what Matt said. No "1.5".

There have been rumors of an update disc but if "Official" word is to be believed we will have to wait for Halo 2 to take the Halo universe online.

I should mention if you guys preorder MechAssault from EB or Gamestop you'll get a free limited edition MechWarrior: Dark Age miniature. Even if you don't play the game (which is fun BTW) it's a good thing to get as they're going for $40+ on eBay and mwrealms.com, oh and you get a t-shirt too.

I think it's pretty lame the way MS is handling this whole thing. It would not be hard at all to build a tunneling service into Xbox live similar to what's available at XBConnect so people could play their system link games. Cheap and easy chance to make a good thing even better and they're not taking it.

When a game is coded for link (LAN) play, the developers can assume ultra high bandwidth, no packet loss and less than 10ms of latency. When tunneling games written this way, results can be very unpredictable, and for many connections that may do fine with XBLive, gameplay may be terrible at times.

There's a reason that the Moto GP guys had over six developers working around the clock for a couple of months go get true internet play (with 200ms latency, 5% packet loss, and less than 2% the bandwidth of LAN) working well with Moto GP. To insure quality of play, it is a whole different animal.

It would be very poor marketing for Microsoft to include LAN tunneling for XBLive, as many gamers would have poor quality gameplay and this would hurt the reputation of the service.

There is no reason for MS to spend time and effort on an Xbox tunneling software workaround when Live! is almost here and works just fine. For folks that want to play Halo online, part 2 is coming out by summer of next year so it's not that long of a wait.

I would rather have Bungie working 100% on making the code for Halo2 run like a dream on Xbox Live! than to have them doing 50/50 on Halo2 and trying to get Halo1 on Live! You would likely end up with 2 equally crapply online experiences than 1 great one.

    Patience is a virtue.

Halo 2 will most likely be released right when the free year of Xbox Live ends for the "first wave" users. Halo 2 is the big game title MS will use to get people to pay monthly for Xbox Live.

That brings up a good point. Has MS said what the ongoing rate may be? Is it going to be $5 a month or something else close to 50/12? I guess they could get people hooked and then jack it to $10 if they wanted and I bet they would lose less than half the subs.

With gamers hooked on up to 50 online games by the end of next year, I don't think Halo 2 alone is going to have a big impact on whether people stick around or not.

Halo has been overemphasized, and that will change as the library matures.
