What are some ideas you have for grouping up the remaining Universal Horror Classics?

To begin, I'd like to see:

THE BORIS KARLOFF and BELA LUGOSI LEGACY
    The Black Cat
    The Raven
    The Invisible Ray
    Black Friday

*This set may also incorporate some other films starring just one of the actors, such as:

Murders in the Rue Morgue (Lugosi alone)
    The Climax (Karloff alone)

We need at least three more volumes of the Deanna Durbin Movies.
How about a douglas sirk collection to include Magnificent Obsession, Back Street, Time to love and a Time to Die, Madame X

Universal - when, oh when can we have Flower Drum Song.

I think he's talking about horror films only.

I like your idea of a Lugosi/Karloff Collection.

How about a Mad Doctor Collection

    Island of Lost Souls
    Dr Cyclops
    Mad Love
    Doctor X

Probably a good idea if the later two were not owned by Warner. [IMG]

    The Hammer Monster Collection
    The Brides of Dracula
    Curse of the Werewolf
    The Gorgon
    Twins of Evil
The Phantom of the Opera 1962
    Captain Clegg a.k.a. Night Creatures

How about: The Mummy, The Mummy's Ghost, The Mummy's Hand, and The Mummy's Tomb.

Also: The Invisible Man, The Invisible Man Returns, The Invisible Woman and The Invisible Agent.

Also: The Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Return of the Creature and The Creature Walks Among Us.

The Black Cat, The Raven, The Invisible Ray, Island of Lost Souls and Dr Cyclops- all great!

Actually, Drew, I think those collections (Mummy, Invisible Man, and the Creature) are coming out, except for the four that you mentioned on the end. The Lugosi/Karloff and Hammer collections would be wonderful. I'd buy those in a second. It could happen, as the previous Legacy sets were so successful. At least one good thing came out of the Van Helsing movie.

My own suggestion would be an Abbott and Costelllo set composed of all the horror-related comedies they starred in (A & C Meet Frankenstein/The Mummy, Hold That Ghost, and a couple of others). But its very unlikely as the current Abbott and Costello have most of those movies, though in separate sets.

The 6 INNER SANCTUM movies with Lon Chaney Jr would be cool, as would a Karloff/Lugosi set. The Creature legacy set should include field sequential 3-D versions of the first and second films in addition to the modified flattened out prints. No anaglyph conversions!

Man, we'll be lucky to get any 3-D at all, much less field-sequential. I'm not getting my hopes up...

Any suggestions for the best way to group the more "general horrors" of the 1930s and 1940s (stuff like THE MAD GHOUL and MAN MADE MONSTER, for example)....?

I think after we get the Mummy, Invisible Man, Creature, etc. they'll probably start with "Universal Horror Classics" Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3, etc., each volume containing several films.

One thing, I'd prefer not to have the Paramounts and Universals mixed together. Different studios, different atmospheres. Not quite appropriate for the horror-tinged "legacy" series, but rather for their "franchise" series, I'd like to see a collection of Universal's early-30s Slim Summerville / ZaSu Pitts features. But, I'm certainly not holding my breath, waiting for such a thing.

I think John's list up above makes for an excellent arrangement of collections, which I'd heartily endorse.

Well, I am sure my thinking would be completely alien to the Universal decision-makers, but we can dream. With all the Universal and pre '48 Paramounts they control, undoubtedly they have a major library. Although we have several of the A films on DVD, I really enjoy the B and programmers a great deal, and there is no outlet at all for these. At least Fox has Fox Movie Channel and Warners/MGM and RKO have TCM, but poor Universal has nothing, although they occasionally lease out films to TCM and AMC before the latter became useless.

Here are some more Legacy's I would love to have:

The Jon Hall/Maria Montez color kitsch classics

Their four Olsen and Johnson comedies

A two volume set of Richard Arlen/Andy Devine actioners.

    Donald O'Conner college musicals

    EAST OF BORNEO
    EAST OF JAVA
    NORTH TO THE KLONDIKE

And howz about those fun, little known gems such as
    NIGHTMARE
    HALFWAY TO SHANGHAI
    AIRMAIL
    BOMBAY MAIL
    BROADWAY
    BOMBAY CLIPPER
    DARK STREETS OF CAIRO
    I STOLE A MILLION
    NIGHT WORLD
    THE STORM
    STRANGE DEATH OF ADOLF HITLER
    THE SUN NEVER SETS
    THE SUSPECT

Gosh, I wouldn't even mind WHITE HELL OF PITZ PALU!

Great ideas, John! However, you've missed THE INVISIBLE RAY, CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN, JUNGLE WOMAN and JUNGLE CAPTIVE! [IMG]

You're right Joe. I figured the Jungle Women films were spoken for, but I am hoping Universal will think THE INVISIBLE RAY is an INVISBLE MAN picture and it will show up on the upcoming Invisible Man Legacy Set. But yes, the Jungle Women films and the Inner Sanctum are musts...

I must be more anal than I thought, because I'd hate to have INVISIBLE RAY mixed in with the INVISIBLE MAN films!

I know you're big on the "Poe Collection," but I'd be more pleased with a "Karloff and Lugosi Combo Set":

    THE BLACK CAT
    THE RAVEN
    THE INVISIBLE RAY
    BLACK FRIDAY
(they could even throw in SON OF FRANKENSTEIN again) [IMG]
