In my search for a pre-amp in my budget I ran into alot of nice used piece all ranging in price from about $300-$1200, I figured it might be worthwhile to post my findings in case anyone else is looking to get into seperates on a limited budget.

Parasound AVC-2500U , under $1000
Aragon Soundstage, under $1000
Sunfire Theater Grand II , under $1000
Lexicon DC-1, under $1000
Meridian 565 with DTS upgrade , under $1000
Krell HTS 5.1 , over $1000
Outlaw 950 , $600 or so
Acurus ACT 3, $300-$500

Pretty much every one on this list sold originally for several thousand more and based on what I have read about them I am pretty sure that I would be happy with any of them.

Feel free to add to this list or ask questions about any particular piece.

I think it's worthwhile to note that for under $1000 budget most people will be better off going with a reciever with 5.1 preamp outputs. I think many of the new recievers out these days will have more features (7.1, DPL2) and sound just as good as any pre-pro that is a few years old. I think a lot of used pre-pros have way too high an asking price for what you get.

If features are a guys main concern then I agree totally otherwise I believe that no $1000 or less reciever can sound as good as some of the pre-pros available used for that same $1000.
