Very good review. Thank you. I'll have to sample that commentary track at some stage. I agree entirely with your assessment of the over use and misuse of the term film noir.

Thank you for the fine review. Today, people have different interpretations of the term "Film Noir". Some definitions are much broader than what was originally thought of as "Film Noir" movies. Without question many crime and even some melodramas contain film noir elements, but don't entirely fit the strict definition of "Film Noir.. My personal definition is probably broader than Robin and Timothy's. Anyhow, I've never seen this film or at least, I have no memory of ever seeing it. My Kino shipment has finally arrived in my city so now I have to wait on UPS transferring my shipment over to the US postal service. I'm hoping to have this on Christmas Eve, but it could be Wednesday if either of these package delivery systems screw up. Either way, I'm looking forward to watching this film sometime this week and I will definitely check out the audio commentary.

For what it's worth I don't consider any colour film to be film noir.

I know you love Slightly Scarlet - you've told us often enough :) - and that is usually considered film noir. Do you disagree with that judgement?

Very good review. I'd never seen the film before but Lisbon is a wonderful city and I bought the Blu-ray partly to view all those colorful 1950s location scenes (no shots of the iconic trams unfortunately). The plot is somewhat slight and I never quite figured out the back story concerning Maureen O'Hara's husband. Claude Rains and Ray Milland hold the film together well with their star presence. I was rather taken with Yvonne Furneaux but it's a bit of a stretch for her to be throwing herself at middle-aged Milland. Incidentally, I see that Ms Furneaux is now 90 years old. Overall I found it an attractive, entertaining film, if lacking in drama.

I can't disagree with any of that.

I had a problem with that too as to Yvonne Furneaux, hubba, hubba.

My first recollection of Ms. Furneaux was in her dual role in The Mummy (Hammer '59), which I saw when it came out. I was a wee lad but she struck me (lightning!) and I understood why Kharis would be pursuing her even after 3000 years.
