SANTA MONICA, CA (November 12, 2019) — One of legendary director Steven Soderbergh’s (Sex, Lies and Videotape; Contagion; the Ocean’s trilogy) most critically acclaimed films, The Limey, returns remastered in time for its 20th anniversary on Digital 4K Ultra HD and On Demand December 10 from Lionsgate. A modern-day film noir told in broad daylight, The Limey is “a masterful bit of revenge cinema” (Frederick Bilchert, Vice) worth revisiting in stunning 4K starring Terence Stamp (Unfinished Song; The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; Superman II), Lesley Ann Warren (Clue, TV’s “American Princess,” “The Cool Kids”), Luis Guzmán (Traffic, Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love), Barry Newman (Bowfinger, Daylight, Vanishing Point), and Academy Award® nominee Peter Fonda (1969, Best Original Screenplay, Easy Rider; 1997, Best Actor, Ulee’s Gold).

After his release from a British prison, a former professional thief (Terence Stamp) finds out his daughter has been murdered in Los Angeles and travels there to learn the truth about her death. With the investigative assistance of another ex-con, he comes face-to-face with the high-rolling record producer with whom his daughter was having an affair.

Experience four times the resolution of full HD with 4K Ultra HD, which includes Dolby Vision HDR, bringing this stylish and inventive film to life through ultra-vivid picture quality. When compared to a standard picture, Dolby Vision can deliver spectacular colors never before seen on a screen, highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker. The Limey Digital 4K Ultra HD will be available for the suggested retail price of $12.99.

Terence Stamp is SO good in this film. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it looks in 4K.

So, no 1080p Blu-ray for those many people who don't have 4K?

Do Lionsgate titles auto-upgrade in iTunes? I was under the impression they did not.

Oh, crap...so Lionsgate is going the way of Netflix now? No physical release?

They put out physical releases when they think the market will bear it - see, for instance, Apocalypse Now.

But consumer preferences are shifting rapidly, UHD costs more to manufacture than any other disc format and sells fewer copies than any other format. I can understand the reasoning behind taking a more cautious approach to what will he released. I’m glad to have my DVD version for the excellent commentary but would be happy to see something better looking, even if that means a digital rental or purchase. That a new 4K UHD transfer has been done also means it could be licensed at some point to a subscription service that I already have.

This remastering will make the film more available to more people over the next 20 years that the prior standard definition DVD master could and I think that’s a good thing.

I've always been of the opinion that the DVD release of The Limey was one of the better transfers for that format, exhibiting a clarity that at times seemed to exceed the technical limitations of that format (which I realize is physically impossible. :) )

Anyway, that is just my way of saying that I have high expectations for the 4K release. Unfortunately, that is all I will have as I currently do not have 4K capability. Sure wish there was a blu-ray release to go along with the 4K, but oh well. I am pretty happy with my current FP so I am not in any hurry to upgrade to 4K. Someday I suppose.

I have never seen this film. The description "a modern day noir" has me intrigued. Worth a blind buy?

IMO? Absolutely! It's one of Soderbergh's best films, and while the entire cast shines, Stamp owns the movie 100%.

    Well worth seeing!

Walter, if you have an AppleTV, the iTunes purchase of the 4K version will also include an HD version of the new master that you can enjoy.

Thanks for the recommendation. The cast list looks impressive. It was only $7.99 on iTunes, so I bit. Like @Robert Crawford , I will hope for a 4K upgrade.

Great cast, and they even find a way to use excerpts of Stamp from the 1960s films he did to allow some flashback scenes.

I don’t know if the iTunes comes with extras, but if it does, the Soderbergh/Lem Dobbs commentary is one of the all time greats.

Absolutely. It is a terrific film. It has a very interesting story structure that was admittedly a bit more 'novel' when the film was initially released, but still holds up quite well. If you've seen Out of Sight with Clooney and Lopez then you sort of have a feel for this film. Out of Sight was definitely lighter in tone, but in terms of a fragmented story structure and quality cinematography and editing the films do share some traits. The Limey is much darker and more serious however.

    Highly recommended.

    - Walter.

Yes, it's a non-linear narrative, and a very effective one.

I haven’t seen this in too long. One of the few films where I’ve heard the commentary at least as many times as I’ve watched the feature.
