Mark,

Grills on a line array? Are you mad!:) If you can get away with having LA's in a room screw grills. Just threaten to kill the kids if they touch 'em!:)

Ahh...the kind and gentle approach from Brian ;)

I agree, if you can get past the WAF and have line arrays in the house, why have grills? Besides, the look of all those drives is eye candy. :emoji_thumbsup:

No grille would speak more eloquently to the aesthetics and priorities of a modern audiophile family-man than a few tasteful vertical stands of chrome-plated wire down the front of the line arrays--with a 500vdc potential on them.

Bill

(Edit) Or, if you actually love your children, I guess AC would be OK too.

Just do what my parents did.. When I went to touch something
they said "Ohh don't touch that, You WILL DIE!"

Now I am afraid to touch anything..... Even myself! :D

The wife is not a problem.

I have already threatened to kill the kids if they touch the screen and as far as touching anything else…

Well, let's not go there.:b

Either I am getting in touch with my feminine side or I am going for a Maggie look alike.

Mark,

You know they have hormone replacement therapy for men now (testosterone shots) don't you!? ;) Why would you want to settle for the "Maggie" look when you can kick the crap outta them and look cool doing it?

If you're still in Texas, head on down to Austin and let Hank set you straight. Grills, we don't need no stinking grills!

Hi Guys,

Just did an update to the thread on my forum about the line arrays. I show preparing the baffles and cabinet for veneering, veneering the baffle, and trimming up all the edges. I also talk about FSV glue vs contact cement for veneering.

Anyone who wants to check it out, fee free. If someone wants to copy the info over here, feel free to do that also.

John,

WOAH these things are looking hotter than a swimsuit model
in the middle of the sahara! (err....)

I can already hear the effortless music being produced by
these, running off my tube amps :)

Very interesting and enlightning thread.

Looks like John has a nice shop!

Brett,

I imagine that line arrays have been around for a while, but I had never seen one until recently. I saw or heard something about a "Linus" speaker, and did a search.

Are line arrays just coming into their own, or is this refinement of long standing technology?

Mark,

Line Array's have been around for a long time. The reason
you don't see more in the DIY world is cost and complexity.

To do a very good line array you will spend at least 2
grand on drivers, materials etc. or more. Plus a Line Array
has it's own specific problems that need solved like Comb
Filtering. But they also have many advantages over Point
Source speakers (typical 2 ways 3 ways etc.)

Heavy? Yeah that's an understatement!

Just the raw drivers alone for Johns LA will weigh in close
to 200 pounds.. Ad to that a heavy weighted base and lord
knows how much cabinet weight and you have a real pair of
ball busters :) But how can you argue with a Line Array?

The only other real choice for me would be ESL's and well
I don't know of any DIY ESL kits :)

Mark,

I spoke with John last night for an hour or two. We BS
every night when he gets a moment's rest. He should have
his measurement pair done by next week so he can work out
the crossovers. The XO's will be fairly simple with Baffle
Step Compensation and Phase Matching I believe he is going
to use Solen or Bennic Caps for the test mules but you
could use any esoteric overpriced caps you so choose as
long as they meet the values req'd.. Not sure what he's
using for inductors and resistors..

There will be a Group Purchase on the Drivers and XO Parts
and the Baffels over on John's forums.. He would like to
get a total of 5 people (4 others since my order is a definate..)

See John's web site for updates.

OK, I can't help myself. Brett, the word is baffle, not baffel. This is right up there with the folks in the speaker forum that keep referring to "duel subs" when they are talking about running two at a time. :)

Ok and I suppose it's "Carbon Fiber" not "Carbon Fibre"

And I suppose it's "Tire" not "Tyre" ? :)

I like to add a little euro influence to my posts! Wee Wee!
