Hello im new to the forum, i have a question about my friends new tv.
He has a 47 in. LG scarlet LCD and for some reason it makes everything look weird. he runs it at 1080p and weather its blu ray from his ps3, dvds, or even just tv it makes everything look "low budget". its hard for me to explain but thats the best i could put it it makes everything look like it was really poorly filmed. I was wondering why it does this weather its his settings or if its just the tv or what?

The TV almost certainly needs to be calibrated with a consumer disc like Digital Video Essentials or Avia Guide to Home Theater.

Most HDTVs frankly look like hell "out of the box" because the factory settings are designed to get them noticed on a crowded retail floor surrounded by other TVs and under fluorescent lights. Settings like brightness and contrast are almost always way too high and the mis-named "sharpness" setting (which makes edges more apparent by adding video noise to the signal) is probably cranked to. ("Sharpness" is usually the biggest single culrpit among factory settings in making even HD material look grainy and noisey, and SD material blocky and virtually unwatchable.)

If your friend doesn't have ready access to one of these discs, check his collection for any THX certified discs and do a quick-and-dirty adjustment with the included THX Optimizer software.

The ideal solution is a professional calibration by a pro who knows what he's doing, but those can set you back a grand or more and your friend might want to start with baby steps.

Josh, are you talking about the "soap opera effect", where things look like the're being broadcast live, like on the news? If so, that's the "auto motion plus" or "tru motion" feature. Just turn that off.
