According to DVDAngle, Richard Williams' animated epic, The Thief and the Cobbler will be a cereal box promotional DVD.
Being that there's a 99% chance this isn't the restored version (That has been rumored) or the widescreen version (It was filmed in panavision!)...
How about us starting a petition to get Disney to release the workprint onto DVD? (Including all the 1990's added crap like the voiceovers and added animation as supplements.)
Unless anyone is for certain if Disney is restoring this movie (putting it back together after Miramax's and Completion Bond Company's hacking away of the movie!), we need to get as many signatures as the Wonka petition got.
This movie is certainly the greatest animated movie you've never seen and it deserves a DVD release!
So, who's up for a DVD edition of this movie?

Wow, I had no idea Disney was even involved in this film. As far as I knew this was an independant effort by Williams. He worked on it for many many years before the investors finally took the film away from him and finished it themselves, adding the awfull voices and such. The only involvement I ever heard Disney had was when they stole the majority of the plot and made Alladin. Did Disney aquire the rights to this one?

The edited version of the film, released under the title "Arabian Knight", ended up at Miramax after the bank foreclosed and ceased the film. Presumably, Buena Vista would likely have the video rights.

It's just disgraceful what they did to his life's work.
Is there even a workprint (however crappy looking) anywhere to be found?
Last I heard, Roy Disney was given a special screening of the cut-up film and then shown the original script, storyboards, whatnot...
He fell so in love with the original concept that he is actively trying to regain the lost footage/animation cells that might be in the hands of collectors.
If we do ever see this thing restored, it'll be MANY MANY years from now...

I'd be happy with an anamorphic remaster of the current edition for now. The widescreen Laserdisc I have is hard to watch because of the wild patterns throughout the movie that a pristine DVD image would have no trouble handling. A special edition director's cut would obviously be even better.

A workprint release could be great! The 'Work in Progress' version of Beauty and the Beast is actully (on most days) my favorite Disney animated film!

I got this one last week in a box of Froot Loops. I have now discovered Froot Loops taste truly awful. The voices in the movie kind of suck too. The movie is psycho bananas. Very interesting.
Watching Babar now, from my box of Rice Crispies.
    EDIT:
    This in Canada. Sorry.
