I've just watched the region B blu-ray and can heartily recommend it to any Sparks fans. I'm a huge fan of America's greatest cult band (I count 21 albums from them on my shelf) and was tickled to find that quite a few of their older songs have been reworked to fit into this musical/opera of theirs. The director Leos Carax has previously directed the utterly incomprehensible Holy Motors, but the story in Annette is possible to follow! The picture quality and sound on the blu-ray were good (there was the occasional banding artefact and crushing). At 140 minutes, it is much shorter than anything by Wagner, but it drags a bit when Marion Cotillard isn't on the scene. There are some unforgettable musical numbers here: the duet during sex has been given a lot of press, but there was a fantastic police interrogation number, as well as a singing birth!
