I've noticed that a number of big name musicians/bands are not represented at all on either iTunes or Napster (King Crimson, The Beatles, Bob Seger, etc.) Is this because the artists have not yet negotiated the release of their catalogs to these internet programs, or because Napster and iTunes just aren't all the way up to speed yet?

It could be (and often is) that the owners of the underlying songs -- as opposed to the artists performing them -- haven't licensed out the songs yet. Though the owners are often the performers' publishers, that's not always the case.

Also, I read an article which basically said that several record companies (Sony, Virgin) are developing their own online music distribution sites...And that music controlled by these labels will only appear on their own labels' site...ant not iTunes,Napster or any other competitor.
