Last night I bought an LG 42LE5400 LED at Best Buy for a steal along with their free xbox offer and knew about the IPS panel vs. VA panel differences and requested one with the IPS because it is supposed to be a better panel but in my haste I didn't check the box until I got home and realized I had the VA panel. Is there any real world differences between the two panels to warrant my returning it for the IPS?

Wow, sounds like quite the difference. I might be calling BB later, however, having already asked that they select the correct panel the first time something tells me nothing short of going in the back and selecting it myself is going to work.

Thanks GeorgeAB!

How can you tell if a tv has IPS or VA where is it listed in the specs?

On an LG panel, look on the box, there are two barcodes, the first serial number should have a W in the number, like AUSW, instead of a AUSD. The W in the serial number means it is an IPS panel, the D indicates a VA.

I took a VA panel tv back and got the IPS but I am experiencing a problem: on the extreme left edge, all the way down the side, there is a blue line and a red line on the right so I have Geek Squad coming to look at it.

What do you base that assertion on?

The assumption that someone at Amazon or whereever he buys it will give a damn enough to pull the correct serial number. On another forum this is knowm as the flat panel lottery.

Yeah, but look at all the money you save by not buying your TV from a respected local AV specialist!

VA Panel ~ 170 deg viewing angle

IPS Panel ~ 178 deg viewing angle

Generally all retailers list the viewing angle in their description.
