Essentially, only those who watch stock tickers or play a ton of video games have to worry about burn-in with plasma.

Or people who watch hours and hours of TV with the closed captions turned on because they have hearing problems. :) Who probably outnumber the stock-ticker or static-control game folks.

I don't have a strong preference between DVE and Avia. Some people find the Avia interface less intimidating and easier to navigate, others prefer. If I were a first time buyer I think I'd use the extra $20 to buy a movie and go with DVE. For one thing, the last time I checked Avia hadn't issued an updated version that specifically dealt with digital displays, as DVE has. So there are sections you end up going through that don't really apply and tests that won't work because some digital displays behave differently than CRT-based displays.
