i have and use the avia calibration disk but would also like to know how SAFE are the preset factory picture settings? when a set comes from the factory set high for the showroom i'm wondering if it's one of the preset settings or do they just turn everything up in general which might be different than the preset ones. william

LCDs are fine at any setting. They are not a phosphor-based display, and don't really age with time except with ridiculous amounts of time 24/7. Do not worry about safe like you would with a phosphor-based display.

You still, however, need to properly calibrate with a test disc, using the methods for your LCD, and not those for a CRT.
