Thanks for the replies! A lot of good ideas- it is hard to buy DVD's for someone else (unbiasedly!).

1. Laurel and Hardy sound films are not out on DVD (Oh, god, I wish they were)
2. The 2 movies that make me guffaw every time are Dick and Get Shorty

I love these best-of threads. By the time it has run its course, just about every film in the genre will have been recommended. (See previous threads on "best" horror or sci-fi or westerns.) You'd get the same results by accessing the "browse comedies" link at Amazon.

Bedazzled. The newer version takes the cake IMO.

Also got a good laugh out of Meet The Parents, Deuce Bigelow, The Animal....

I am a little surprised that no foreign flicks have been mentioned yet, just off the top of my head:

Cousin, Cousine (French) - later remade by the same director as Cousins (Ted Danson, Isablle Rosinini)

Tendre Poulet (French) - Also known as Dear Inspector.

La Boum (French) - Madcap teenage slumber party, May be hard to fine.

Women on the Verge (Spain)

M Hulot's Holiday, Tati's most accessible and physically funniest film, if not his greatest.

Any comedy by Billy Wilder and I.A. Diamond (even the bad ones). "Miracle Of Morgan's Creek"
Dean and Jerry Films (Come on Paramount)

Note: All the above have no fart jokes.

The Miracle of Morgan's Creek
is the funniest movie ever made. Try it. (DVD next summer!)

I laughed pretty hard during
Meet the Parents
Legally Blonde
(for two recent laughfests).

Probably the funnest time I ever had during a first-run movie was
Animal House.
I don't know if it's available on DVD or not.

My picks are:

Meet the Parents
Some Like It Hot
Liar Liar
Austin Powers in Goldmember (hilarious in parts)
American Pie
Detroit Rock City
There's Something About Mary
Dumb and Dumber (hilarious in parts)

I picked mostly main streams.
