According to recently released sales figures by Japanese retail agency Media Create, Sony's PlayStation 2 continues to dominate the market. Despite encouraging initial sales, Microsoft's Xbox has failed to pass the cumulative 200,000 sales market in the Japanese market. Check out the complete breakdown of Japanese market year-to-date hardware sales figures below. For reference, all associated figures are representative of sales through May 26.
PlayStation2 - 1.70 million
Game Boy Advance - 1.18 Million
GameCube - 563,200
Xbox - 193,600
PSone - 114,800
WonderSwan Color - 83,600
Game Boy Color - 50,400
Dreamcast - 16,000
Nintendo 64 - 4,400
WonderSwan - 3,900
Game Boy - 3,800
PocketStation - 800
Following last week's highly publicized price cut announcements, several consoles posted strong sales figures including 65,200 for the PlayStation 2, 30,900 for the Game Boy Advance, and 7,400 for Microsoft's Xbox (inclusive in the year-to-date totals above).

Here are last week's sales for all systems:
PlayStation2 65,200
Game Boy Advance 30,900
Xbox 7,400
PSone 4,800
Gamecube 2,500
Game Boy Color 1,200
WonderSwan Color 1,100
It's worth noting that the Gamecube sales probably dropped in anticipation of the Gamecube price drop, which should be reflected in next week's chart. Bottom line:
Sony owns Japan

I can't believe the PSone is still selling as well as it is over there. I guess the price and game library are two big factors.

Actually, Sony owns the world. I'm not trying to be a fanboy, but based on the console sales, its the truth.

I predict that Dreamcast will come from behind, and eventually eliminate Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo completely. You heard it here first, folks!

I don't really see what the big deal is about, They are all in different stages of their life spans. If you think that the PS2 is going to keep the lead in sales for the next 5 years you're going to be very dissapointed. But seriously, who gives a shit, the Xbox will have 200+ games for it by this holiday season, the Cube will be selling gobs of Mario games making Nintendo money hand over fist. No one is going any where so what difference does it make. Enjoy the great gaming times we have and stop worrying about whos on top because the numbers don't really mean anything useful anyway (now if everyone launched on the same day the numbers would be more interesting to look at)

5 years?! Hell we'll all be buying xbox 2's and gamecube 2's and playstation 3's by then and you all will still be whining about which is better. The only thing that will change is the name of the console.

The thing is, by the time PS2 sales slow down, it will have outsold the PSX (the highest selling console ever) and will have an unbeatable lead on the X-Box and GameCube, making it the "winner" of this generation.

"Winners in numbers sold."

What else matters about a product besides its sales figures?

Surely you don't care about the QUALITY of the product, do you? You are starting to sound like an "individual." Better join the masses and get with the program. All those consumers buying PS2's can't be wrong. Sony IS the "winner."

The winner of each generation is usually determined by the consoles sold. Nintendo 64 had a higher good game to bad game ratio than the PlayStation, but the PSX still won.

...and the useless competition and "Console Sale Wars" continues.

When are people going to learn that in the end the only true winner in this whole bit of nonsense is us. We get the games, the hard drives, the online gaming and the innovations we all look forward to.

The only people that should be looking at these numbers and patting themselves on the back are those making the profit for the hardware and software they manufacture and develop.

I'm all for a good sales thread that provides information that allows us to look at the state of the industry around the world.(Which this thread had been doing until recently) Lets keep the discussion on that level and not turn things into yet another pissing contest about who's X is better than your Y and is smaller than my Z. Don't these same retread arguments get old?
