Look at all these fantastic MGM laserdisc box sets, most of which have things on them not on any Blu-Ray or DVD, most of which are from surprisingly late in the 1990's, and every single one of which comes in packaging to die for:

I have a few of these (That's Entertainment treasury, Wizard Of Oz, Gigi, Brigadoon, American In Paris) but I wish I had every one of these beauties.

The long time collectors sure miss those packagings. All that extensive reading material! When I saw the LoA big box set Blu-ray, I was hoping to possibly see more sets like that. I still think there is a market for such extensive sets in limited production, but I could be wrong.

Hi Stanley!

The only thing that even seems to remotely approach LaserDisc's packaging splendor in this era are the Limited Edition DVD/Blu-ray Box Sets that come along every so often!

Alas, LaserDisc is the one major Disc format that passed me by!

CHEERS! :)

The main thing that attracts me to collecting these old laserdisc sets are the beautiful art and cool bonus features. Some of my favorites are the Amadeus Pioneer Special Edition, the 30th anniversary set for The Sound of Music, the My Fair Lady set, and The African Queen. That link David posted makes me want to blow some more cash on old LD sets, haha.

You sure can gauge the lack of effort the video manufacturers are putting into selling physical copies of movies by how appealing the packaging isn't. The Blu-Rays get better and the packaging gets worse, or at least more indifferent. It seems that the studios have forgotten everything they ever knew about showmanship.

Everything is getting so expensive that manufacturing the discs in Mexico isn't even helping. Some of the artwork, which is really all you get with most studio releases anymore, has been nothing more than photoshop images. The older DVD releases were even better in that regard. I kept trying to find a seam or pocket in the nice foldout MFL set, looking for the booklet. :)

All adrool from afar!

Here in Oz, LD never got a look-in, and I'm drooling with envy as I pore over these glorious titles with exquisite cover art and packaging. Looks like the epitome of the physical media tactile experience.

It's also got me hankering for my large vinyl collection, which I purged in the mid-80s with the rise of CD. Bad, bad mistake!

Thanks for this link, David.

LaserDisc memories...

In the mid/late 90s I would take my holiday (vacation) in the Los Angeles area, and would always drive to Ken Cranes on Beach Blvd in Westminster to stock up on LaserDiscs, which I would then bring back as hand luggage on the 'plane. I spent so much money on them and never had to pay import duty or VAT at Heathrow :)

Such great memories. I loved Ken Cranes shop. LaserDisc was very niche (and so expensive) in the UK. I also used to visit Dave's Video - The Laser Place in Studio City, and Virgin Megastore and Tower Records on Sunset, and finally LaserBlazer.

For those saying the sound on LaserDisc was better than the sound on Blu-ray, the reason for this is because the cinema sound track wasn't remixed when put on LaserDisc. Unfortunately, someone has convinced all the studios that it's necessary to create a near-field sound mix for the home. This is almost never done by the original sound mix engineers, it's just farmed out to 'specialists'... The DTS soundtrack for 'Jurassic Park' is the stand-out soundtrack on LaserDisc - far better than the Blu-ray mix.

You'd hope they could give you the option of the original cinematic mix or near-field Home mix, but sadly I've never seen this :-(

I no longer own any of my LaserDiscs. I miss the packaging, printed material, commentaries and other extras. My Pioneer CLD2950 (NTSC/PAL) player was great.

James.

I used to shop on line at Big Emma's for laserdiscs and got some great deals. Columbia House had a laserdisc club and got a bunch from them and also my local Blockbuster stores when they had them. Great memories and I still have most of them and my 3 players including the first dvd/laserdisc player made by Pioneer.

Some recent Laserdisc from last year. A few dts ones and AC-3 Japan pressings that was still new and sealed. Laserdisc is often better than hollywood near field mixes of the same film where Laserdisc just leaves 4k near field in the dust.

Arachnophobia (1990)
Arrived this morning.
The Dolby Stereo bass and sub bass extension pressurized the THX cinema! I could feel the JBL surround arrays pressing against my body, the stage channels bass and sub bass extension! It gave me a flashback to the UCI High Wycombe THX screen.

Got the region 2 DVD not played in a while. The Laserdisc looks and sounds equal better if not sounds better even thou its in Dolby Stereo matrix and the DVD is Dolby 4.1. This is one my Laserdisc demo discs.
