My Panasonic RP56 is having increasing center channel (dialogue)dropouts which are solved by careful cleaning of discs. Usually rentals of course . . .

Anyone know whether that happens due to gradual laser alignment issues, laser life-time issues or whether the laser just gets dirty? Unit only 6 mos old. Is it possible to clean the laser lens assembly?

What is decoding the signal? Internal or external?

External: Toslink out to Classe' SSP25 preamp/processor.

Since I could remedy the problem (mostly) by cleaning the discs, I was assuming the problem to be with the player becoming too sensitive over time.

BobH,I find it a bit strange that only the center channel have these dropouts. If the digital stream is fault in some way it should be a total dropout of sound in all channels not just one. The problem could be in the processor itself.
